For project three, I partnered up with my friend Emily to create a project surrounding Amelia Earhart and how she overcame misogyny in the workplace and in society. We also read The Da Vinci Code By Dan Brown to help us create symbols (tattoos) that would represent Earhart. With the virus affecting our school, it was a challenge to work from home, but we managed to create a pretty neat project that we are pretty proud of! We changed our projects so much, but that process was what got us to the end result. The theme of the project was reasoning, and Emily and I did have quite the struggle tying our theme into our project. We tied reasoning in with art, social studies and English in many different ways. For English, we wrote an essay comparing and showing similarities to Amelia Earhart and Sophie Neuvu, a French police woman in The Da Vinci Code. It was very interesting to see how similar these two women were, even though one of them was a fictional character. Reasoning came into play for English when we tied together how Sophie and Amelia's childhood was traumatic, but they both worked through the trauma and become incredibly successful. For social studies, Emily had a wonderful idea that we see who Earhart would vote for if she was alive today, and saw all different presidential candidates from George W. Bush to Barack Obama. We decided on Obama because he and the First Lady, Michelle Obama have made great strides towards the women's rights movement. We tied reasoning into this project (and changed it several times while doing so) by making an evidence board that supported our claim. Finally, for art, we made tattoo designs that represented Earhart, her childhood and even her flying. I did the write up of these designs, while Emily (the artist of the project) made the designs. With the book we read, we learned a lot about symbolism, and what certain shapes and animals meant, that was probably the most fun research to do! We tied reasoning into our art project by not only designing these tattoos, but also explaining the meaning behind them as well as explaining the symbols that go along with it. This was my final project for Apollo, and I had the best year doing Apollo and making new friends in the process! I am so excited to see what next year brings.
